Pain Relief Glossary
Acupuncture – This Chinese practice uses needles to relieve a person of pain and stress. The needles are inserted into the skin on specific parts of the body.
Acute Pain – This type of pain accompanies an acute disease or injury.
Analgesics – These are medications that will relieve pain.
Anesthetic – It is a substance that is used as a pain reliever.
Anti-inflammatory – This medication is used to lessen inflammation.
Arthritis – This condition causes inflammation in the joints. It can also cause pain, swelling and stiffness.
Bradycardia – This is the term for a slow heart rate.
Central Pain – When there is a problem with the central nervous system, central pain happens.
Cervical Vertebrae – The first seven bones of the spinal cord makes up the cervical vertebrae.
Chronic Pain – Pain is considered chronic if it has lasted longer than three months.
Delirium – When people are in this type of mental state, they can experience disorientation and hallucinations.
Delta Receptors – This term is used to refer to two subtypes of opioid receptors. The subtypes are delta-1 and delta-2.
Drowsiness – If someone is drowsy, they will feel sleepy. Drowsiness causes people to fall asleep at inappropriate times.
Dynorphin – This is an endogenous peptide that works as an agonist for the kappa opioid receptors.
FDA – This stands for the Food and Drug Administration.
Hallucination – It is a type of false sensory perception. It happens without external stimuli.
Headache – A headache is the term people use when they are experiencing pain in their head. The pain can also occur in the neck or upper back.
Hives - This is a type of skin reaction that can occur. It causes raised red skin.
Hypothermia – This is when a person has a body temperature that reaches an abnormally low-level.
Ligaments – These are bands of tissue that connect the bones.
Miosis – Miosis happens when a pupil contracts.
Nausea – A person will have an upset stomach when they feel nauseous. It can also include having the urge to throw up.
Nerve Block – This is a method that is used to block pain. In order for it to work, medicine has to be injected into the nerve.
Opioids – They are a group of synthetic drugs that are similar to opiates. They are meant to treat moderate to severe pain.
Orthostatic, Hypotension – A person has this if they have low blood pressure when they are standing.
Overdose – You can overdose if you take too much of a drug.
Pain - This can take many forms. It is the most prominent symptom that people can experience.
Painkillers – These are meant to lessen pain in the body.
Pain Management – It is a type of discipline that deals with relieving pain.
Pain Medicine – This is a branch of anesthetics. It deals with treating acute and chronic pain.
Pain Therapy – This type of therapy is meant to help patients deal with their chronic and acute pain.
Rotator Cuff – The rotator cuff stabilizes the shoulder. It consists of four muscles, as well as their tendons.
Sciatica – This is a pain that occurs in the sciatic nerve.
Side-Effects – These are different reactions that can occur after taking a drug.
Tachycardia – This occurs when a person has a fast heart rate.
Tramadol – It is a type of opioid that is used to treat moderate to severe pain.
Trigger Point – When people have fibromyalgia, specific parts of their body can elicit pain if they are touched.
Tumor - These can be benign or malignant. It is used to describe an abnormal growth in the cells or tissues.
Urinary Retention – This happens when a person lacks the ability to urinate.
