Tramadol and Alcohol
Tramadol hydrochloride is a pain relieving synthetic medication that acts similarly to a narcotic although its chemical composition is different. This medication is used to treat moderate to severe pain and is available around the world in a number of different brand names such as the popular drug, Ultram.
Tramadol has been effectively providing pain relief for the last forty years although its method of relieving pain is not fully understood. Science does know that this medication is a prodrug, which means its effectiveness is only understood by the way it is metabolized within the body. In order for Tramadol to work, the body must break down the components of this drug before they are activated to provide pain relief.
Most narcotics work to relieve pain because of the way they work with human opioid receptors. Narcotics, however, are nonselective as to what types of opioid receptors they influence. Because of this, side effects often occur as well as the high risk of addiction. Ultram works different by only activating mu opioid receptors resulting in euphoria, analgesia and respiratory depression.
Tramadol also works to provide potent analgesic effects to relieve moderate to severe pain. With its ability to elevate serotonin and to inhibit norepinephyrine absorption in cells, neurotransmitters are raised to produce mood elevation and pain relief.
Ultram should never be combined with alcohol use. Individuals who have a history of alcohol or drug addiction should not use this medication. Because Ultram has depressive effects on the central nervous system, if taken while intoxicated this will enhance Ultram’s effects causing the brain function to decrease. This can result in side effects that may begin as drowsiness or dizziness, but become more severe affecting memory and behavior. The risks of seizures are also increased. Other problems may also be experienced such as difficulty breathing, lack of coordination and passing out.
Tramadol is a prescription medication and therefore it is essential that users follow instructions exactly as provided by their physician. Combining Tramadol with alcohol should always be avoided as serious side effects can result, especially when taking high doses, which is common in individuals who use recreational drugs.
